Šestnáct komunistických a socialistických stran o víkendu v Římě oficiálně nastartovalo novou evropskou levicovou stranu.
Vůdce italských komunistů Fausto Bertinotti byl jednomyslně zvolen vůdcem nové strany, jejímiž hlavními tématy jsou mír a sociální záležitosti, ústava EU a budování společného základu pro kampaň v červnových evropských volbách.
"Evropská levice musí vystoupit ze strategické defenzívy, v níž se stále nacházíme", řekl pan Bertinotti, jehož Rifondazione Comunista je spolu s německou Stranou demokratického socialismu a francouzskými komunisty hlavním iniciátorem nové skupiny.
Podle AFP řekl, že nová levice musí zlomit sepětí se stalinismem, který představuje utlačování.
"Odklon od stalinismu je chápán jako osvobození myšlenky komunismu od utlačování a pohled do budoucna. Musíme se vrátit ke kořenům, abychom se dostali dopředu."
Evropská levice, jejímž cílem je posílit radikální levici v rozšířené EU, je tvořena stranami z Rakouska, České republiky, Estonska, Francie, Německa, Řecka, Itálie, Lucemburska, Slovenska a Španělska.

Sixteen communist and socialist parties officially launched a new European left party in Rome over the weekend.
The Italian communist leader Fausto Bertinotti was unanimously elected leader of the new party, whose main themes are peace and social issues, the EU Constitution and building a common campaign platform for the European elections in June.
"The European left must come out of the strategic defensive that we always find ourselves in", said Mr Bertinotti whose Rifondazione Comunista along with the German Party of Democratic Socialism and the French Communists were the main initiators of the new group.
He said, according to AFP, that the new left must break the links with Stalinism which now represented oppression.
"The break with Stalinism is meant to liberate the idea of communism from oppression and look toward the future. We have to go back to our roots to move forward".
The European Left, with its aim of strengthening the radical left in an enlarged EU, is made up of parties from Austria, the Czech Republic, Estonia, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Luxembourg, Slovakia and Spain.
